Sports teams from Tennessee university competes in SEC (southeastern conference’s Eastern Division. Among them are other Universities like, Kentucky, Florida, South Carolina, Vanderbilt and Missouri. The only team from the Tennessee University that does not compete in mentioned competition is a women’s rowing team. They compete as a single-sport member of the Big 12 Conference.
The football team won the NCAA Division I-A National championship in: 1938, 1940, 1950, 1951 and 1998.Their coach was Phillip Fulmer from 1992 to 1998. The Tennessee basketball team won the SEC season championship in 2008. This was their first championship in 40 years! The women’s basketball team won the NCAA Division at: 1987, 1989, 1991, 1996, 1997, 1998, 2007 and 2008. They are currently coached by Holly Warlick. The biggest rival of this team is Vanderbilt!
Neyland Stadium, is the best known facility in the University of Tennessee. In 2009 they invested $200 million in renovation! After the renovation, students could choose the name of the stadium. They choose ‘’Rocky Top Rowdies’’. Other names were," "Smokey's Howl," "Vol Army," and "Big Orange Crew." The revenue of the athletic department is $111 million! The most popular sport is football. It has an attendance of 95.500 viewers per one game! Attendance of the men’s basketball matches is smaller, with 16.500 viewers per home match.
University of Tennessee offers many recreational sports, like: wrestling, crew, running, golf, soccer and paintball. It is known that teams join in the Southeastern Collegiate Hockey Conference, or play Southeastern Conference and in other rivals. The colors of teams are chosen by Charles Moore in 1889.
