Brown University teams are a member of the Ivy League athletic conference. It is treated as the top level (Division I) of the NCAA (National Collegiate Athletic Association). The teams from this university are known as The Brown Bears. This university has the 3rd largest sports programs in the United States! They are sponsoring 32 different intercollegiate teams. For example, the best college for this is Harvard (sponsoring 42 teams) and Princeton (39). The athletic program is one of the top 20 on the U.S. News & World Report. In 2014, they added a women’s rugby.
The sport teams from the Brown University are very successful. In the last 14 years, their women’s rowing won 7 national titles! The men’s rowing team won a silver, bronze and silver medal in the national races (2012, 2013 and 2014). Women’s and men’s crew teams won trophies in the Henley Women's Regatta and Henley Royal Regatta. Soccer team won 18 Ivy League titles, in total, and they are ranked in the top 20. The soccer team is competing, professionally, in Major League Soccer. Their most successful football coach is Phil Estes. With him, they won Ivy League championships, three times (1999, 2005 and 2008).
Some of the most known alumni of the Brown’s football program are: Bill O'Brien, Joe Paterno, Fritz Pollard and John W. Heisman. The women’s gymnastics team from Brown University won the Ivy League tournament two times (2013 and 2014). On 19 January, 1989, the first ice hockey game was played in America. It was between Harvard and Brown University. Also, the first rowing regatta larger than a dual-meet, was held on 26 July, 1859 at Lake Quinsigamond in Massachusetts. It was between Harvard, Yale and Brown University.
